Elite Email Reveals Twitter Rankings For NHL's Top Point Earners
A study by Elite Email ranks the top NHL point scorers from the 2012-2013 season by Twitter followers.

September 24, 2013

Toronto, ON

The NHL season is upon us and fans are clearly turning to social media to follow their favourite players, especially on Twitter. Elite Email, a world leader in digital marketing tools for small to medium-sized businesses, reveals who has the most followers for NHL's fifty highest scoring players.

"Our data revealed that these hockey superstars are more active on Twitter than anywhere else in the social media sphere," says CEO Robert Burko of Elite Email. In 2011, the National Hockey League issued a social media policy for its players and club personnel highlighting issues surrounding social networking and instating a "blackout period" on the use of social media on game days (source: NHL.com). At the time, one of the most active players on Twitter was Paul Bissonnette with more than 130,000 followers who today has more than 450,000.

While players can't tweet during game time, it has not stopped their fan base from growing. Elite Email tallied Twitter scores (aka followers) for some of the best players on the ice, showing Washington Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin topping the chart at more than 600,000 followers. Fans can check out the full list at http://www.eliteemail.com/celebrity-social-media-rankings/nhl/. Coach John Tortorella of the Vancouver Canucks recently criticized Twitter for being narcissistic but the truth is more and more players are using it to connect with fans. "Despite Ovechkin having the highest Twitter score, it doesn't appear that goals on the ice necessarily translate into more followers," says Burko, pointing out players like Sidney Crosby and Martin St Louis do not have verified Twitter accounts. The Elite Email team reviewed a targeted group versus the entire NHL, where several other players use the tool too, especially younger ones. The NHL lockout was likely a catalyst for more Twitter activity.

Elite Email, known for its email marketing services, has recently released easy-to-use mobile marketing and Facebook page builder tools that allow customers to integrate their digital marketing strategy across all three channels. The Elite Facebook Page Builder and Elite Landing Page Builder helps people and businesses brand themselves on the page through fully customized tabs, drag-and-drop features and hundreds of design templates, ultimately enhancing user engagement. Elite Email is the only company in Canada offering this technology as an integrated suite with its other emarketing tools.

Data Collection Procedure
Elite Email researchers reviewed the 2012 -2013 season's top fifty point earners of the NHL (note: the list is based on goals and assists only). The most popular social networks were reviewed for each player: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. The team began seeking out ‘verified' profiles. No verified profiles were found for these players on Facebook. Instagram does not verify profiles, so these were not included. Therefore, the chart was built based on Twitter data only. There were countless fake profiles/general fan pages but only verified pages were used in collecting this data to ensure authenticity. The chart is based on "followers" only to measure ‘social reach'. ‘Social activity' such as frequency of posting or the most recent post date was not reviewed.
