Ava & Skilled Companion Dog Oliver

“My daughter, Ava Heller, was born with Spina Bifida.  She received her Skilled Companion Dog Oliver when she was only four, at a time when she had many struggles both medically and socially.  Over the past five years Ava and Oliver have been through a lot of challenges and growth together, including Oliver helping Ava to overcome her mutism.  The bond they've developed is incredibly special, Oliver always comes running happily whenever she needs him. He really enjoys helping and he loves to snuggle her to sleep.  Ava is so proud of Oliver, she loves to take care of him and to share stories about her special dog. Ava says Oliver is her best friend and the best gift she has ever been given!" –Monica Heller

"Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose." -Helen Keller

Courthouse Dog Pono recently began working full time at the Honolulu Prosecutor's office. Pono provides comfort and courage during forensic interviews for children who are victims of crime. One parent said "This program is invaluable. Having the dog there made a huge difference and helped my girls to find their words when nothing else could." Mahalo to the Gartner Family Foundation for helping to make this program possible.

“We are honored and humbled by the opportunity to help HCI raise Sadie. With the fantastic guidance we’ve received, training is so much fun! She is brilliant and learns everything quickly. We spend a lot of time exposing her to all sorts of different experiences here on busy Oahu. We absolutely love her and are excited about her future. She is destined for greatness and we appreciate the chance to help her along the way. Temporary big brother Leo adores Sadie also and helps with her lessons when he can!!” –Margot & Larry Jodoin, HCI Puppy Rasiers

Each week, HCI staff and volunteers look forward to visits from groups like Easter Seals, Kokua Villas and Special Education classes. The HCI Ohana Program provides education, exercise, and fun activities designed to meet the needs of each group. Program participants volunteer to help with cleaning, gardening, and grooming the dogs, so everyone benefits and has a great time!
