Strengthen your toes - improve your power.

Q: Why is it that gifted athletes often are pidgeon toed?

A: Since high level athletic performance is determined by many factors including mental, emotional and physical, it is unlikely that pidgeon toes plays a big role in athletic success.

However, pidgeon toeing can enhance sprinting and jumping power because the contraction of the flexor muscles of the big toe are more effectively transferred into a ground action force that is in perfect alignment with the direction of movement.

If the toes are pointing away from each other (hallux valgus) the bone of the big toe is not on the same line as the flexor muscles. This means that less of the contraction forces are transferred into movement of the big toe.

The relative force contribution from the toes during a jump is low compared to the force contribution from hips and knees. However, this small contribution can give the high level athlete the edge over the competition.

When I work with professional and Olympic calibre athletes I always have them work their toes, particularly if the goal is to improve vertical jump ability.

The simplest and most time efficient way to strengthen your toes is simply to start focusing on the pressure applied by the toes into the ground as you run, jump or move in your sport specific pattern.

Do not be surprised if you don't feel anything at first.

If your toe extensors are tight, they can inhibit the action of the flexor muscles. If that is the case, give the toe extensors a stretch before your workout.
