High Performance Training Tips #50
August 11th, 2008
Dear Friend,
Your Butt is Getting Smaller.

I know that to some people the statement "Your butt is getting smaller" would be considered a compliment.

To me "Your butt is getting smaller" is not a compliment!

My wife knows this and sometimes when she wants to tease me, she will say:

"Sweetie, I think your butt is shrinking"!

Of course, my discomfort in hearing the statement above has NOTHING to do with vanity, but is ONLY founded in rational physiological reasons:

  1. With no butt, forget about lifting anything heavy with your legs.
  2. With no butt, forget about achieving any significant level of vertical jump height
  3. With no butt, forget about achieving any significant running speed.
  4. With no butt, get ready for back pain as you get older.
  5. With no butt, forget about a truly powerful physical appearance.

The importance of the butt muscle lies in its role as primary hip extensor: it's been shown that 30-40 percent of the jump height comes from the force of hip extension.

The primary muscle to give anterior-posterior shape to the butt is the gluteus maximus.

The gluteus maximus is particularly activated when the accentuated region of force of the exercise corresponds to high degrees of hip flexion.

Primary examples of this are deadlifts from the floor (not rack) and deep - "ass to the grass" squats.

The gluteus maximus muscle is a phasic muscle, composed mostly of fast twitch fibres and thus you expect it to respond better to heavy loads.

Here is my favourite way to work my butt:

A1. Walking Lunge (suitcase style), 3-5 sets of 4-8 reps, rest 90 - 120 sec between sets.

B1. Kneeling Back Squat, 3-5 sets of 8-12 reps, rest 90-120 sec between sets.

Give those exercises a try and let me know, what you think.

If you want to know how to work your butt without weights, you can pick up a copy of "Best Butt on The Beach" by clicking here... For 24 hours there is a 30 percent discount available ONLY to subcribers of our list.
