Dear Friend,
Thank you for all the feedback we received on the last newsletter! I would also like to welcome all of the new subscribers to the YTS bi-monthly newsletter. I hope you enjoy and can benefit from the information provided. Please feel free to send me an email with any feedback and/or questions you may have. It’s crucial for all trainers to understand that we are in the business of changing lives. We do that by helping our clients to improve their bodies, because a healthier body equals a healthier mind (you have to be fit to think, like Paul Chek says). However, all good trainers are also “life coaches”. Very often that’s not a conscious choice for trainers, but it happens because they are good listeners and their clients naturally confide in them. These trainers, which fortunately also is the majority of trainers, within a few years of being in the business, realize that in order to truly help their clients, they must also teach what strength is OUTSIDE the gym. This does not necessarily require formal education, but only the life wisdom we should all possess. Mike Bruce's article, Essence of a Strongman (strong man) (posted January 26, 2009) is exactly about what being strong outside the gym really means. That’s why, we played with “Strongman” and changed it into a strong man (woman) (Don’t get fooled by his use of strong “man”. Substitute man with “woman” if you are one). Our new book, “The Flexible Periodization Method”, is coming along nicely. This week's article, FIRST Improve Structural Strength, THEN Improve Functional Strength, is another subsection of the book about how to improve structural strength. It’s a little technical, but you can skip to the end and read about the exact parameters to use to develop this crucial aspect of fitness and performance. It has taken me years to assemble this information, so I think you are quite lucky to get it in about 15 minutes. It’s my goal with “The Flexible Periodization Method” to make it the most practically useful book EVER written on the topic of periodization. Stay tuned and be ready to make some life changing training programs when the book comes out. Enjoy! Karsten Jensen PS: For many years I was unsure about the true value of our profession. It was only recently that I realized that we actually are CHANGING LIVES. Think about it for yourself until you are comfortable with that notion as well. Karsten Jensen's Blog:
