Tummy Tuck Today, Beach Body Tomorrow

Are you tired of selecting a bathing suit based on how well it hides your tummy?  If fewer and fewer bikinis seem to have the right fit, a tummy tuck may be the answer.

That’s because, despite the strictest diet and exercise programs, many people aren’t able to firm the skin around the abdomen. Others have loose abdominal skin following a heavy weight loss or pregnancy. That’s when abdominoplasty can be used to slim and firm the tummy.

This procedure, also known as a “tummy tuck”, removes excess skin that has lost its elasticity. It may also help reduce fat, tighten loose abdominal muscles and improve the appearance of stretch marks. This provides a more contoured stomach and well-defined waistline.

During a tummy tuck, an incision is made just above the pubic area.  This incision stretches horizontally across the lower abdomen.  The skin is then gently pulled away from the muscle, the muscle tightened, and excess skin is removed.  Then the incision is closed and skin is stitched back into place.  Usually, an additional incision around the navel is required.

The procedure lasts between three and five hours, depending upon the degree of improvement desired.  As with other types of surgery, patients need a few weeks to recuperate, with most returning to their normal activities within two weeks.

Unless there is a significant weight gain or the patient becomes pregnant, the results of a tummy tuck should last for many years. Complications are generally few.

Laser Hair Removal More Popular Than Ever

Since its introduction in 1995, laser hair removal has come a long way. It’s now one of the most popular medical cosmetic procedures, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASPS), with more than 1.5 million treatments performed last year.

With warm weather coming, it’s not hard to understand why the laser method has been so well-received. The procedure is fast, easy, and quickly clears large body areas that would otherwise require repeated shaving, painful waxing or messy usage of chemical depilatories.

During laser treatment, light energy is delivered to the targeted area and absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles. This absorbed energy creates a short burst of heat, which damages the germative cells that make the hair grow. With repeated damage, these cells lose their ability to form hair and are eventually removed from the body. Because hair tends to re-grow finer and thinner in treated areas, if it grows back at all, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) allows the process to be described as permanent hair reduction.

Treatment is rapid - smaller body areas can be hair free in a matter of minutes, and even the largest body areas can be treated in under an hour. For best results, a series of several treatments is required, since the laser only treats hairs that are actively growing but does not address those that are dormant or resting.

Because it’s so fast and effective, many men now prefer laser to other hair removal methods like waxing and plucking. According to a recent survey from Cargo Magazine of 500 men in North America, 54% remove hair on their back, 45% trim chest hair and more than 70% remove hair around their eyebrows, ears or neck. Of those, one in five said they prefer laser hair removal.

Eyelid Technique Wakes Up the Eyes

The eyes are often called the “windows to the soul”, but when eyelid skin starts drooping or bags under the eyes enlarge, those windows can become hard to see through. Sagging lids or puffy bags can also age the face, making a person seem older or more tired than they actually are.

Although topical products can help firm the skin and correct less extensive sagging, they can’t completely counteract the effects of the aging process, which tends to stretch the skin around the eyes. Sun damage, smoking, and heredity can also contribute to changes in the skin and the support structure of the eyes. These changes can include excess fat behind the eyelid, leading to slackening of ligaments, muscles and skin; dropping of the eyebrows; and thickening of the muscle in the eyelid itself.

The most effective way to “open” the eyes is to surgically remove the fat and excess skin causing the sagging or puffiness.  This procedure, called blepharoplasty, takes about an hour and is performed with local anesthesia.

Blepharoplasty was the third most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the U.S. last year, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), with more than 240,000 procedures performed. This represents an increase of 15% from 2006. Blepharoplasty has also become increasingly common for men, with one man for every four women undergoing the procedure.

Sunscreen vs. Sunblock

Sunscreen does more than protect the skin from cancer caused by ultraviolet light. It also helps prevent the sagging and wrinkling that can result from sun exposure.

But all sun protection products aren’t created equally. Although “sunscreen” is a universal term that is now used for all sun-protection lotions, the active ingredients in sun protection products can be divided into two categories: chemical and physical.

Chemical sunscreens contain special ingredients that act as filters to reduce the penetration of ultraviolet radiation into the skin. These sunscreens are often colorless and maintain a thin film on the surface on the skin. They usually contain UVB absorbing chemicals, and more recently, UVA absorbing chemicals as well.

Physical sunscreens, also referred to as sunblocks, contain ingredients which create a physical barrier to block ultraviolet radiation from entering the skin. Unlike their chemical counterparts, these physical ingredients provide broad protection against both UVB and UVA rays, so they tend to offer greater protection. In the past, many people found them cosmetically unacceptable because they left a thick, white layer on the skin that did not wash off easily. Today, however, micronized formulations provide the same amount of protection without the added mess.
