Colorescience: the Makeup that Colors, Corrects and Protects
Colorescience cosmetics aren’t just about beautiful colors and flawless coverage: they’re the next frontier in appearance enhancement, incorporating technology that corrects skin imperfections and prevents further damage.
And now, Afterglow Skin & Laser Centre will become the first aesthetic clinic on the North Shore to carry the line.
Although Colorescience is new to Canada, the line has built a loyal following in the U.S. and Europe. It was created by Diane Range, the inventor of mineral makeup and founder of Bare Escentuals.
Colorescience takes the concept of mineral makeup one step further, with face, eye, lip and sun protection products that actually improve skin quality. Completely free of dyes, talcs, fillers, mineral oil, perfumes and other ingredients found in traditional cosmetics, Colorescience promotes healthy skin function. Products adhere to, and lie on top of, the skin surface, providing a protective barrier from the environment. Their reflective and light absorbing properties shield the skin from radiation, helping to reduce the risk of skin cancer. Because Colorescience products are formulated with high quality, water resistant minerals, they keep skin clean and clear, while remaining completely waterproof.

Do Your Hands Give Away Your True Age?
They don’t have to anymore: hand rejuvenation with Radiesse can turn back the clock,
providing a plumper, more youthful appearance, reducing skin laxity and wrinkling, and diminishing the prominence of underlying structures such as bones, tendons, and veins.
A dermal filler that also produces excellent results on the face, Radiesse is ideal for this purpose because it adds bulk and volume while being durable enough to withstand repeated dynamic motion.
An anaesthetic is added to the filler, and small amounts are injected underneath the skin, and then spread throughout the hand. The result of this approach is a treatment that is easier to massage and virtually painless, with minimal post treatment downtime.
Results appear quickly and last for up to one year.
Many patients notice a significant improvement, with hands often appearing as much as 10 years younger.

Photodynamic Therapy Eradicates Acne
Nearly two million Canadians suffer from acne; for about a third, acne is severe and leads to embarrassing outbreaks, rashes and scars. Although many products help control acne, few have been clinically shown to effectively reduce acne and prevent it from returning.
Photodynamic therapy (PDT), however, has demonstrated excellent results in eradicating acne. This is because by combining light energy with a special topical photosensitizer, PDT can selectively destroy acne-causing bacteria.
In one clinical study of 72 persons with moderate to severe acne on the face, those receiving PDT experienced a 61% decrease in acne lesions after four PDT treatments at 2-week intervals. Side effects and discomfort were minimal.
The first step in treatment is the topical application of Levulan to the skin. Levulan is a 20% Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA), a substance that is found naturally in the human body. After Levulan is absorbed into the skin, it is converted into a potent photosensitizer, protophorphyrin, that can absorb light energy of certain wavelengths. Because ALA is absorbed into the sebaceous (sweat) glands, it selectively targets them. The skin is then bathed in blue light from the BLU-U system. This activates the protophorphyrin which leads to shrinkage of the sebaceous glands. By shrinking the sebaceous glands, acne-causing bacteria is reduced and acne is improved.
