Welcome to the November issue of the Deco Tile Newsletter.

As we come closer to the end of the year, it's time to start looking forward to 2007 and the trends that are in store.

With this in mind, we thought we would devote this newsletter to upcoming trends in the industry and provide some insight into the latest 'must haves' in the USA and Europe ...

.

Yet Again ... Old is New!

According to M Magazine in the USA, designers are seeing colours and materials that were "hot" long ago regaining popularity. "It" colours this year, according to De Marion, are celery green and primary colours. Once loved in the ’70s, then shunned in the ’90s, bold shades of green and orange were featured prominently at recent tile industry trade shows.

"Glass is really coming back as well, whether used as accents or entire applications," says De Marion. "We’ve seen concrete and stone tiles mixed with glass accents, similar to restaurant or commercial applications from the ’30s or ’40s."

Traditional decorative designs are also coming back. Once, scrollwork and other relief sculpture designs were commonplace in commercial and residential designs. Patterns and decorative finishes are again en vogue, with both traditional and contemporary flair.

Homeowners are choosing bold metal pieces with imprinted or embossed shapes. For a personal touch, homeowners can even choose to create a monogram or "logo" for their entryway or home focal point. Tiles that are bevelled to create creases between tiles are coming back, while hand-cut or imperfectly shaped tiles are contemporary takes on the traditional.

Janet Carter ASID, the author of Showroom Management states that "a very popular type of tile today is one with and embossed relief (listello) design. The raised decoration can be subtle or bold, depending on how much the raised elements extend out from the background of the tile. At this year’s Coverings show, relief was the name of the game. In fact, I’ve never seen so much bold relief."

"Must Have" Trends

"It’s the way tiles are combined that can merge traditional and contemporary," says De Marion. "Stainless steel, cast bronze, copper and brass are all being combined with stone and other more traditional materials in the home."

Mosaics combining a variety of tile sizes, materials, shapes and colours can add flair to any tile installation or frame more traditional pieces.

According to Tile of Spain at Coverings 2006, it’s not all beige going forward – Tiles are popping with fresh, cheerful colours in shades of red, green, orange, yellow and blue. While neutrals remain a staple in the designers’ repertoire, they are mixing it up with colour and combining bright field tiles and neutrals in the same installation. Classic black and white tiles remain an elegant and dramatic choice on the colour scene.

Bright accent pieces provide a splash of colour as manufacturers expand collections to include larger design selections of listellos and borders. Mosaics are huge! Tile designs are exploding with mesh backed mosaic designs and solids. The finished effects – whether solid or graphic – are amazing.
