April 2012 Newsletter
Here we are, nicely into spring. With the new season, there is always a sense of rejuvenation, new ideas and new projects in the works. I found that I was rather uninspired by the drab winter we had, and confess that I did not head out on many photography excursions - as many of you know, I like lots of snow, storms and adverse weather for my images. I did head out a few times, but everything looked like it did in November - brown & drab. And I won't even mention the dismal ski season...... But here we are now, with the grass turning green, flowers blooming and birds singing love songs to each other. So dust off that camera, and head outside......
May & June workshops.....
May & June are jammed full of workshops - many of them cover seasonal topics, and are only offered at this time of year. I am teaching in a number of locations, including Conestoga College, The Elora Centre for the Arts, the Arboretum in Guelph, and at F-Stop Cameras in Orangeville. Read on for the upcoming schedule.....
Coming this Saturday, April 21, there are still a couple of spaces in "How to Photograph Your Artwork" in Elora. This is a class I have decided to offer to artists wanting to create digital files of their artwork for their portfolio, or for gallery submissions. You can bring in a few of your own pieces of art to work with in class. Contact me if you would like more information.
May is a busy time for classes, with seasonal workshops scheduled before the summer break. I have also included an Introduction to Photoshop class on two Wednesday nights in Elora, May 2 & 9, from 7 to 10. This is a great way to get started with the creative aspects of image editing, and will give you confidence with using Photoshop Elements to enhance your photographs. If possible, you should bring your own laptop, but I do have a few extras which are available for loan. Contact me by e-mail or call 519-787-7040 for more details or to register for this one.....the fee is $110 + HST and includes detailed step-by-step notes which you can use for later projects.
At the Arboretum in Guelph, I have a few classes planned for this spring - look for Gardens & Wildflowers Field Trip on Sat. May 12 from 9 to 12 p.m. This class is timed to take advantage of the trilliums in the woods and other spring flowers around the grounds. I am also teaching Night & Low Light Photography on Saturday June 2 from 7 to 10 p.m. The moon will be full, so bring your camera and tripod for great night shots. I finish the summer program on Saturday, July 14 with Nature & Wildlife Photography, another field trip in the woods and meadows of the Arboretum. To register for any of these classes in Guelph, or for more information, visit the Arboretum website.
At Conestoga College I will again be offering some of my single workshops at the Doon Campus in Kitchener. Scheduled so far are: The RAW File on Thurs, May 17, Photographing Kids & Pets on Mon. May 28, Gardens & Wildflowers on Wed. June 6, and From Camera to Computers on Thurs, June 14. Registration is now open through the college website. "A Water Strider's World"
This image is called "A Water Strider's World". It's one I took last fall while out walking near a pond. The reflection of the sky forms a background for suspended leaves, with ripples on the water's surface breaking the uniform patterns into swirls of colour. This is another photograph that I find myself coming back to over and over again, even though at first I found the colours too bold for my taste. I have since printed it quite large, and I am pleased to say it has been selected for the live auction during "Artcetera", a fundraising event at the Elora Centre for the Arts on May 10 to 12. And I know that once it's sold, I'll wish I had it back.
Art News - You're invited to Artcetera....May 10 to 12, 2012
Join us at the Elora Centre for the Arts:
artcetera 2012 is a three-day fundraising art auction that benefits the Elora Centre for the Arts. Local, regional and national artists' work are profiled and available for sale through a Silent Auction bidding process over 3 days, culminating in a Live Auction and Reception on the final evening.
300 original works of art from established and new artists, a Wish List Silent Auction (non-art items donated from retailers and the business community) and a Collector's Corner (art donated by our patrons) will be for sale, including oils, pastels, watercolours, sculpture, pottery, jewellery and fine crafts. This event not only raises much-needed funds for our organization, but allows us to promote and support our local and regional artists as well. Silent Auction Thursday, May 10 from 5pm - 8pm, Friday, May 11 from 12 noon - 8pm, and Saturday, May 12 from 10am - 4pm. The Saturday Night (May 12) Live Auction and Gourmet Reception includes live music, great food and wonderful art. Doors open at 7:00 p.m, with the auction starting at 8:00. Custom art prints
Many of you know that I am quite particular about how my photographs are printed, and since my favourite lab closed this winter, have been unhappy with the results from other printers. So I have broken down (not literally!) and bought a large format printer for my images. I have been happily working with different papers, and can say that after the initial sticker shock, I am quite pleased. I am now able to print my images to large sizes, making sure the colours and tone are perfect. I am also pleased to be able to offer this service to those of you who want to have archival quality photographs printed. Contact me for sizes and prices, or to see some of the gorgeous fine art papers available.
