September 2014 Newsletter

Welcome to another beautiful fall season!  I hope you have all had a wonderful summer, and had a chance to photograph your favourite places.  Even with the unsettled weather, there were many opportunities for dramatic images.  The summer months were particularly suited for night photography - we saw some of the brightest moons of the year, and even the stormy weather was visually stunning. And yet, we're coming into one of my favourite times of the year, photographicly speaking - intense weather patterns, dramatic skies, frost, snow....you get the idea.  Oh, and of course, skiing. Nothing to do with photography, but lots of fun.

Upcoming workshops

Exciting news!  I have been teaching a number of workshops in various locations over the summer, but will be expanding my own program this fall in a new studio space in downtown Fergus.  I am sharing a large, bright studio with painter & good friend Meredith Blackmore and will be offering new classes in the coming months.  The location is ideal - on the corner of St. David & St. Patrick St., within walking distance for many of you, and with plenty of parking for those from farther away.

I plan to continue with my popular "Basic Levels of Photography" and "Introduction to Photoshop" classes, but can now include many more topics for the intermediate to advanced photographer.  Most of you know that I am an instructor for the Commercial Photography program at Conestoga College, and with this new space, I can offer similar classes that are aimed at the beginning  professional or skilled amateur.  I am also offering private & small group lessons - you can design your own wish list of topics you need help with -  and after-school and PA Day programs for kids.

My website has been redesigned to include the complete workshop schedule, and the option of on-line registrations. If you're looking for a specific topic, let me know.

Equine Photography Workshop - Sunday October 26, 2014

Everyone seems to want a fall equine photography program, (because our last February class was so cold???) so here it is!  I've scheduled this one for Sunday, October 26, from 10:00 to 4:00 pm, at Travis Hall Equestrian Centre.

The farm is located just outside of Fergus, and has 1409-0059a variety of horses to practice on, including this year's baby, New Forest Pony foal "June Bug', who is ready to provide lots of cuteness for our photos. (Psst: she's for sale, too!)

You'll learn the basics of equine photography, including cameras & other equipment, posing horses, dealing with conformation problems, and shooting action photos in this fun, full day workshop. The morning is spent in the classroom, then in the afternoon we'll practice with horses & riders, with an emphasis on shooting action, including jumping, mounted games, dressage, western events, and more. Bring your camera, and wear suitable clothing (no sandals).

This class is perfect for horse owners, breeders, and those who simply love horses. Teens and adults welcome. To get the most out of this course you should have a D- SLR type of camera. Bring extra batteries and memory cards .

The course fee is $160 + HST, and includes lunch.  Registration is available through my website, or by phone or mail.

Early in the new year, I'll be following this class up with a creative editing program, where you'll learn some basic Photoshop skills, and use your equine photos for special techniques and prints.  This class will be held in my Fergus studio....more on this new option later.......
