Alex Kealy in Bamyan
"There is such beauty in the landscapes of Afghanistan that one can actually look forward to an 11 hour drive on bone-rattling unpaved roads. The PARSA team drove down to Bamiyan in late February to restart programmes in the Jawzjereen valley as the harsh winter begins to draw to a close. There were four of us, and Yasin’s two young sons, 3 and 5. If you had put a couple of English children in the car I can imagine we probably would have left them on a mountainside somewhere having listened to them scream and fight for hours. But little Faisal and Siar were quiet as mice, sitting happily in the boot of the car playing games with the 3 kilograms of oranges we had bought to keep us going during the journey. Connor will be coming back to Afghanistan....
Connor O’Steen spent four months last summer with us in his hiatus from college. He recently wrote me and let me know that he has won a grant to come back this summer and work with people in Jawzareen who want a hydroelectric generator installed in the river so it can supply electricity to the valley. I am inspired and amazed that he has taken so much initiative and been able to negotiate the grantwriting process to secure funding for this. Congratulations Connor. Here are some of his notes about his trip to Bamyan last summer.
..."Summer 2008..We drove back from Bamyan yesterday afternoon and I've had a fun day doing very little, not being in a car, and procrastinating on writing this e-mail. The six days in Bamyan felt so extensive, so full of activity and events, that it seems like any letter will automatically fail at providing a full picture. Even getting started is intimidating.

Request for assistance...
PARSA is about to launch our Center for Creative Abilities -a vocational center for working children and disabled people. Funded by Betty Tisdale, HALO, with assistance by the British community we were able to renovate this 100 year old building. BUT winter proved difficult and it is apparent that we are going to have to put an expensive tin roof on to preserve the building (for the NEXT 100 years). Do any of you know of organizations or individuals that might be willing to help fund the addition of this roof? This is outside of our budget and we are starting the furnishing and selection of the first 100 children next week..Please e-mail me at mgustav@mac.com if you have any ideas or contacts...
