Letter from HLAA President
 Greetings Hancock Leadership Alumni!
I feel very privileged and excited to serve as President for the association this year. We will be continuing the visioning process that began last year under John Urbanski's leadership. As part of this process, you will be receiving a survey request in the coming weeks. We truly value your opinion and would appreciate your response. HLAA is your organization--please share with us your vision for the association.
Another communication coming your way is a membership renewal request. Some of the key programs your dues support include Hancock Leadership scholarships for those that could not participate in the program otherwise, the annual Halloween Parade, and the annual Coats for Christmas drive. If you prefer, you may go to the Hancock Leadership Alumni website and pay your dues online. Your support is critical to the association and truly appreciated.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our graduation ceremonies this Spring. Dates and event details will be on the website.
Sincerely,
Tina S. O'Dell

Letter from HL Director
 Greetings!
As we embark on a new year full of opportunity and hopefully, better economic times, the class of 2010 is ambitiously tackling its class legacy project: a collaboration with Habitat for Humanity to provide planning, funding and manpower to assist with the new Habitat ReStore as well as funding for West Park playground improvements.
The location of the ReStore is 2042 Rear Tiffin Avenue, Findlay, Ohio. It is located next to Cheddars, set back from Sherwin Williams and Carpet Mart. Its grand opening is scheduled for the weekend of April 8-10, 2010. The concept of a ReStore is to accept donations of new and used materials from a variety of sources, employ those materials whenever possible in the construction of Habitat homes, and sell the balance in its retail operations at least 50% below retail. Donators would include contractors, building supply stores and individuals. Donated materials would include discontinued products or lines, misordered or returned merchandise and construction materials left over from job sites.
The two primary purposes of the ReStore are: (1) to increase the capacity and self-sufficiency of Habitat Findlay/Hancock County to produce affordable housing for the people of Hancock County and (2) to reduce the amount of construction supplies that go into the county landfills. Stay tuned to learn ways that you can support this exciting opportunity!

Non Profit Board Positions
Across the Board…..
Charities depend greatly on volunteers for their governance. Volunteers donate their time for a variety of reasons: such as the charity’s programs, or that the position brings them some level of prestige. Most often, the motivation is a sense of civic duty and the satisfaction that comes from making a contribution to the community. Charities often seek prominent members of the community to serve because of the business and management reputation or to image- boosting the by having the well-known among its trustees.
Prospective board members should investigate what such a commitment will entail, and understand the role, function, and responsibilities of a charity’s governing body. Stay tuned – our next issue will focus on the primary duties of: care, loyalty, maintaining accounts, compliance. |
